THE HISTORY OF THE BEACH HOTEL
Where Hjerting Badehotel is today has been an inn or hotel for more than 300 years. The site has always been of great importance to the town and the people on the beach, which has historically been a busy loading area for exports and fishing.
Hjerting Kro burned down in 1914 when the innkeeper had to light a fire in the com-
furrowed - a tragic incident that cost her her life. In 1914, construction of Hjerting Badehotel began. At the time, Hjerting was a popular vacation destination, especially for tourists from Eastern Denmark. They enjoyed the peace and quiet of the hotel, bathing on the beach and the fresh air. The pension at the hotel was good and many guests returned year after year. During the war, the hotel was occupied by the Germans, and after the war the same bathing life never really returned. Instead, the hotel became more important as the local gathering point, whether it was a family celebration or a Sunday outing, where the destination was often dinner or afternoon coffee at Hjerting Badehotel.
The water was no longer the same due to pollution.
The town changed character during the 60s, and many summer cottages disappeared and were replaced by year-round houses. During the 80s, the water became clean again, and bathing life slowly began again. Over the years, Esbjerg Municipality did a lot to expand the facilities and the area around Strandpromenaden, so that in
today appears very attractive and inviting to tourists and visitors alike
and locals - and bathing is now back.
The story being written today.
The new chapter experienced today at Hjerting Badehotel started in 2024 when Kasper Elmholdt and sisters Mie and Mette Hyttel merged and started their first journey together around their passion to bring Hjerting Badehotel even more back to its roots, while making it contemporary with today's trends in experiences when it comes to gastronomy, decor, bathing, art and accommodation
Based on the local community, its sense of community, and their shared love of the sea, the remodeling of the bathing hotel's beautiful building's interior common spaces began, including the restaurant, the small local meeting place, the secluded library and fireplace room. With great inspiration from their shared love of the sea, the venue's year of origin in the 1910s, and contemporary gastronomy, art and interior design, they took the first steps on the journey to transform Hjerting Badehotel into its original beauty.
The inspiration for Hjerting Badehotel starts in our childhood years, growing up with a Danish seaside hotel as our second home, the beach as our playground, mixed with the longing and curiosity to travel to the Meditian Sea and its beautiful coastal towns - the climate and the pantry are very different, but the common denominator is the love for the sea and the food. We try to let it all come together to bring Hjerting Badehotel back to its original roots and origins.
